Provenance was founded with a love for ethereal wines that express their sense of place, whether that is the enchanting Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny and the thrilling Chardonnay of Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy, or perhaps the velvet Syrah of Hermitage, Northern Rhone; those are wines that taste of somewhere specific

We aim to do this with a balance and purity that shines through when the site speaks louder than the hand that crafted it. A focus on the southwest corner of Victoria led us to discover incredible vines in genuine cool-climate locations, where the synergy of local climate and the style of wine we aim for meets perfectly.

Winemaking on our boutique scale enables us to share a story of the season with a viticultural voice. There is a reason why the stated year on our labels exists. Provenance wines in the cool seasons harbour a delicacy and vibrancy, sometimes racy nature, while the warm years glow with immediacy, richness and fruitful generosity. Some seasons are better suited to Shiraz, while others may be a year for pristine Riesling and Pinot Gris. The Goldilocks grape of Pinot Noir is its precocious best when all the stars align, and while Chardonnay is wonderfully capable of producing expressive wines in many conditions, 2022 is, without doubt, an unequivocally great year for Provenance Chardonnay.

From tasting the grapes on the vine in the lead-up to harvest time, we knew the 2022 showed great potential. As the juice was gently pressed to barrel, you could feel the power and freshness woven through the youthful flavours of each site. Once their fermentations were complete and the oak influence integrated, it was about capturing the story and coaxing it into the bottle.

The reviews are outstanding, and the wines are ready for release; sadly, due to the agricultural nature of grape-growing, our vineyard yields were down, and there is not the quantity available of previous years. However, the trade-off is that quality is exceptional, and we believe these wines are singing now. Plus, with the great years, you can cellar 2022 Provenance Chardonnay with confidence.
