2023 Ballarat Chardonnay

Vineyard
Established in 1997 at Scotsburn, on a windswept ridge 1.5 km from the base of Mt Buninyong, this site is planted in old goldfield soils. These soils, remnants of the Ordovician period, are made up of clay and sandy quartz breccia along with angular quartz pieces, sandstone, mudstone and siltstone. At 500m elevation, warm days are followed by (acid-retaining) cold nights. Vine rows run north-south and are trained to a VSP canopy.

Independent Review
"520m elevation; Whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight and racked to barriques the next day. A bright green gold. With its aromas of ripe stone fruits and just a hint of freshly churned butter, this is noticeably richer than the '22. This comes through on the palate, but so too does that fine vein of bright acidity that will, no doubt, ensure the wine's longevity. Of this year's three subregional wines, this will need the longest time to fully hit its straps." 94 Points
