Thanks to a decade-long search, we now have a patchwork of vineyards across South West Victoria to grow our cool climate varieties of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Nebbiolo. But our search is far from over, and we are always on the lookout for the perfect combination of variety and site.
Balance, purity, and sense of place form the overarching philosophy that drives the winemaking decisions.
The health of our vineyard soils allows us to grow grapes that truly represent their vineyard provenance. As part of our "light touch" vineyard farming, we use compost where necessary.
Sam Vogel’s journey to winemaker began with his farming roots in Victoria’s Mallee region and has since spanned continents and decades.
His first vintage was with the iconic Vasse Felix in Margaret River, followed
by international experience in France’s Southern Rhône (Cairanne) and Corliss Estate in Washington State, USA.
A pioneer in the Australian wine scene, Sam co-founded the country’s first urban winery, Noisy Ritual, and served as Head Winemaking Consultant for China’s fourth-largest wine company for four years. Back home, he spent two decades working alongside Provenance founder Scott Ireland; first at Austin’s Wines in Geelong, then as business partner when Provenance moved to the historic Fyansford Papermill in 2017.
Today, Sam is the sole owner and director of Provenance Wines, President of Wine Geelong, and a proud father of two. His winemaking philosophy is grounded in authenticity, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for place; values that shine through in every bottle.
