2022 Geelong Pinot Noir

For us, our Geelong Pinot Noir is a flag bearer for the variety in the region and shows the distinctive character we strive for.

Tasting Note
"Deep ruby with a peek of garnet, the lifted aromatic nose, a complex weave of dark spices of star anise and cassia, beetroot autumnal notes, high-quality oak supporting the broad mouth filling fruits of fleshy black cherry and red currant. The cool-climate acidity brings balance to the powerful, deep, core of classic Moorabool valley Pinot Noir."-Tom Brushfield, Provenance Wines (18 May 2024)

Growing Season
A moderately wet winter was followed by a dry period combined with high-pressure systems, leading to some late frosts in the Moorabool and Barwon Valleys. The Bellarine and Surf Coast avoided the late frosts; however, significant wind events at flowering resulted in below-average crop yields.

The wet and humid growing season that followed was a true test of resilience. As the vines grew robustly, our vineyard manager worked tirelessly to control the resultant canopy, opening it up to allow airflow in the hope of preventing mildew.

The grape cell division period of the season went poorly for most, resulting in berries that didn’t swell to ‘normal’ size. Small berries combined with the early season issues meant low yields and a strong skin-to-juice ratio. The bonus of these conditions was that the resultant wines had good colour, tannin, and depth of flavour.

Overall, the season was again ‘cool’, with no days rising above 40c and a few days over 35c.  This led to excellent natural acidity levels, assuring wines of great finesse and elegance.  The wines are of high quality and, most certainly, another great year that consumers will enjoy for years to come.

Independent Reviews
"This is a spicy pinot noir with beetroot notes pushing into earth, red cherry, game and fragrant herbs. It’s very Geelong and it’s very pinot. It’s complex and structured, and the more you look at it the more those earth notes edge forward. It will mature well, no doubt, but this is drinking well now." - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front

"A single-vineyard wine from Moorabool; 90% whole berries with a small portion of whole bunches, matured in barriques (25% new). A deep-ish bright crimson. Brooding with aromas of red cherries, ripe strawberries, black tea and a gentle meatiness. This is the richer and more structured than Provenance's Ballarat and Henty pinots. While not quite as approachable now, my gut feeling is this will become the most complex in time. They are all worth seeking out!" - 96 Points Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
