2024 Geelong Shiraz

Vineyard
Planted in 1997 on a gentle north-east slope approximately 5km south of the township of Bannockburn, part of the Moorabool Valley sub-region of the Geelong region GI. Planted in red sandy loam over ironstone gravel, which sits above a mix of red clay and limestone subsoils. The vines grow with moderate vigour and are farmed using organic principles. The 2023/2024 growing season marked the 17th year of biodynamic inputs and weed control via cultivation, with zero herbicides.

Winemaking
Hand-harvested fruit was picked on the 28th of March, reflecting the earlier spring and dry growing conditions. The Shiraz is 100% destemmed as whole berries to temperature-controlled stainless-steel open-top fermenters. Indigenous fermentation began 3 days post-harvest and reached a peak of 28°C. Pressed when dry and then aged in a selection of older large 500L French oak puncheons and only 5% in new French oak barriques for fourteen months’ maturation, before careful racking and bottling.

Independent Review
"This is the full box and dice of savoury-styled flavour. It’s built on a foundation of ripe, plush, cherry-plum fruit flavour, but from there it’s wild with roasted nuts, tomato leaves, twiggy spice and mescal characters. It’s firm, spicy, juicy and svelte at once, with a mountain of leafy whole bunch characters flinging throughout. You’ve been warned. This is a live one." 93 Points
